Pattern Workshop

This is a beginner’s workshop exploring pattern printed with lino and wood blocks. The course will run for 1 1/2 hours for 5 weeks. We will be working in small groups of no more than 8.

Starting on Tuesday 26th April and every Tuesday until 24th May.
Tuesday 26th April, 3rd May, 10th May, 17th May and 24th May at 5.30 to 7

Week 1.

Printing pattern using practice blocks and acrylic paint onto paper. We will use ready cut blocks and other household items to create pattern. We will learn how to make a simple block work as a pattern in several different ways. The idea is to get your creative juices flowing so that you are ready to cut your lino in the next class. You will be given a sketchbook to record your ideas in the week between classes, you will be encouraged to keep all your work produced and handouts in this sketchbook so that you have all the information to hand to build on your skills.

Week 2

Tracing your design ideas and cutting your blocks, testing the prints, learning how printing on paper is different to printing on fabric. There will be time to print some practice fabrics, using the dyes and paints available. During this class we will discuss what your personal project might look like, you may even be able to fit in more than one project.

Projects might included, producing fabric to make bandanas, pencil cases, wall art, tote bags, pouches, cushions, lampshades, decorating clothing or even producing your own table cloths or fabric for cushions.

I will provide fabric, zips, buttons etc for small items but anything over a metre will be charged at cost, you could even bring your own fabric in if there is something that you want to use. We will discuss this and I will get a list of everything you need to complete your project.

Week 3

Using your blocks, and if you feel ready you can now start printing your final fabrics - exciting times! If you feel that you need more time practicing that is fine too, everybody works at a different pace.

Week 4

Making up your project, using sewing machines, hand stitching or any other assistance that you need. I can help inserting zips, making up lampshades, French seams for bandanas – whatever you want to do let’s have some fun!

Week 5

Finishing off your project or making another

Suitable for ages 9+
